$100/person    13-adult     Guide/instructor: Pamela Ptak

You’ll receive hand-outs to fill in details on market trends so you’ll have a record of the analysis methods we used during the shopping trip. We’ll start the day by arriving at AFI™ by 9am to gather for the group drive, stop for a quick lunch & dinner on the trip between all the fun store visits and return to AFI™ around 8pm.

CAMP     4 Fridays, July 11-August 1st         Noon-5pm         "Drape-Draw-Design"
Class cost: $250 for 20 class hours        Students age 13-21        Instructor: Pamela Ptak

The Arts and Fashion Institute™ offers teens a rare glimpse inside a real designer's life by focusing summer camps on each student's originality & creativity! No clone classes here!

We start each camp by investigating major designer fashions from Pamela's immense garment collection, including pieces by Alexander McQueen, Betsey Johnson, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Vivienne Westwood, Junya Watanabe & more. Once students understand that each designer has a signature style and that here THE SKY REALLY IS THE LIMIT, they'll drape, draw & design their own incredible creations guided by professional designer and Project Runway alumni Pamela Ptak to bring their unique ideas to life. Students will drape their original designs in 3D on Pamela's professional dress forms selected in class to match their size and padded to exactly match their curves! After creating their unique patterns in muslin, students will learn to "true-in" their muslin patterns and transfer them to paper, then cut them in real cloth to sew and wear! All draping & drawing supplies are provided at AFI™ in the price of the class. Sewing machines are also provided so there is no need to bring your own, (but you may if you prefer working on yours.) Students will shop for & purchase their selected fashion fabric & trims between weeks 2 & 3. All students in AFI™ classes are included in Pamela's annual AFI™ student fashion shows if they wish to participate. This year's spring show will be held June 7th, 2014. Watch website for details.

PLASTIC WRAP
DRESSFORM

Sunday,  July 13   1-6pm  “PERFECT MOULAGE” DRESSFORM
Cost: $80/person             Instructor: Pamela Ptak

Working with clear plastic wrap, clear packing tape and markers, each student will have their body copied over in plastic and then marked by the instructor with the ideal placement for centers, princess seams, waist, hip & apex levels, etc. These plastic wrap forms are highly accurate and working with them you will achieve design results equal to working with the original cloth French moulage. Because the plastic version holds its 3 dimensional shape, it can be removed from your standard dress form and stored on a closet shelf when not in use.

BRING TO CLASS: two rolls of plastic wrap and two big rolls of clear packing tape. Students should wear bra & undergarments which position your body in your selected silhouette for designing garments. Wear or bring to class a snug fitting top & leggings so that we are not wrapping the plastic directly against your skin.

Class cost: $1,000 (50 study hrs) Master class prerequisites: sewing, draping experience, interview and permission of instructor               Instructor: Pamela Ptak

This is the graduate-level class in Corseted Evening Wear I developed for Drexel University while I worked in NYC for 3 years on collections for the Paris Haute Couture. "Haute Couture Corseted Eveningwear" includes advanced lessons in draping, pattern making, machine and fine hand sewing. Focusing on evening wear with visible corsetry or hidden foundation layers and/or corselets (also called French linings), students sketch a set of gowns, then select & create one of them using haute couture techniques, draping, pattern making & couture hand finishing work. Through Pamela Ptak's draping demos of rare techniques, explanations & demos of advanced sewing samples, students will learn to create couture samples they’ll proudly show to future employers or clients. During this course, each student will:

1. drape & pin a half muslin corselet, convert it to full paper patterns & then sew "in full" in muslin with zipper for dress form (or model) fitting
2. create a set of fashion illustrations of viable options for final gown
3. drape & pin a half muslin evening gown, convert it to paper patterns, sew it "in full" in muslin for fitting and then sew it "in full" in fine fabric for final critique
4. machine & hand sew samples of couture finishing techniques for sample book
5. gather a picture swipe file of properly identified corseted evening wear variations

2 days Sat & Sun.  11am-4pm  "COUTURE CORSETRY"
Cost: $200 (10 study hrs)
Students need sewing experience  Instructor: Pamela Ptak

Learn the inner workings and perfect structures found in the world's finest couture corsetry. Couturier Pamela Ptak will give you an insiders view of corset making, teach you what materials & hardware to use in a variety of corsets, recommend styles for your particular needs and answer your questions about this most beautiful fashion garment.

Day 1, Saturday, begins with analysis of Pamela's collection of corsets to learn the different types. Then you'll get your measurements taken for your own first fit muslin. Students should wear bra & undergarments which position your body in your preferred silhouette for corsetry. Pamela will then start you converting your measurements to pattern paper to cut in heavy muslin so you can sew up your fit muslin for Sunday's class. Students are welcome to stay in the AFI school studios until as late as 8pm to finish your fit muslins.

Day 2, Sunday you'll have your fit muslin evaluated & corrected for fit, then convert the changes back to your paper patterns, followed by going over all the remaining details for stitching, boning, lining & finishing. This workshop covers both simple laced, busk-front & tight lacing corsets with a variety of textiles from coutil to silk brocade, denim, wool, velvet, duchess silk & even lighter weight textiles.

As some detailed & decorated corsets can take 100-200 hours to complete, you will not be making a full corset in this workshop. You'll be making a full fit muslin and a detailed notebook with sketches, notes & samples of a variety of corset details so you have a design vocabulary to complete a number of popular corsets.

Bring to first class: Notebook & pencils, sewing & cutting tools, 1-2 yards of heavy-weight stiff muslin, 4-5 yds rigilene (sew-through) boning for your fit muslin, textiles or swatches if you have specific fabrics you'd like to use on your first corset. Prepare your list of questions.

If you're traveling long distance for this or any weekend workshop at AFI™, feel free to contact us at 610-346-6071 for names of local motels and bed & breakfasts in the region.

DRAPING
WOVENS

Arts and Fashion Institute™
Bucks County & Lehigh Valley PA

Fall 2014  - 2 1/2hr classes in  "Draping Wovens"
Class cost: $300 for 6 weeks  Students 13-adult  Instructor: Pamela Ptak

The garment industry acknowledges 5 basic silhouettes which form the basis of many other forms used in design. In this class, you'll learn to perfectly drape several of the basic silhouettes. Working on full-size dress forms in the AFI™ studios, each student will drape their own garment patterns in muslin, then true it in and re-pin it as a 1/2 body muslin. As you develop an understanding of the balance, proportion & scale of these very important basics, you'll begin to discover the nuances which make up a designer's personal style. The understanding of draping also provides a fine background to sewers looking for perfect fit. This class is especially suited to beginning drapers, as well as students heading to further fashion school.
Bring to first class
: 5 yards of medium weight muslin, sharp fabric scissors, no. 2 pencils and notebook. Drafting tools required for class will be shown in 1st class and may be purchased at the school.

"INTRO BIAS DRAPING"
Students 13-adult   Instructor: Pamela Ptak

One of the rarest skills a fashion designer can offer is a strong understanding of the way different fabrics behave when draped on the bias. This class is an introduction to the principals of bias draping which will help students enrich their fashion skills & 3-dimensional design vocabulary.  Taught by Pamela Ptak, who studied bias design at the French founded Maison Sapho & at FIT in NYC and whose original bias draped garments are in private collections around the world, this class is a fun introduction to rare bias draping theories. Starting with basics of bias, students will drape a number of original designs and develop them through to finished paper patterns. Instructor will explain differences in handling the sewing of garments cut on the bias.
Bring to first class: 4-6 yds medium weight draping muslin, scissors, needles & threads, pattern making tools, notepad & pencils. Draping muslin, pattern making paper, and fashion design drafting tools & supplies are available for sale in class if you do not own them.
